Driving rules
Scooter users must obey the same rules as pedestrians.
- Drive on the footpath or nature strip wherever possible; only use the road if there’s no other option.
- Use pedestrian crossings or cross at areas of high visibility.
- Don’t drink and drive.
Handling tips
Scooters are surprisingly comfortable and manoeuvrable.
- Slow turns – make turns slowly and avoid sudden jerky movements.
- Rear-view mirrors – use your rear-view mirrors often to stay aware of what’s going on around you.
- Travel straight – travel up and down inclines as straight as possible to avoid tipping the scooter.
- Increase visibility – display a safety flag and wear light coloured clothing.
- Slow down – reduce speed when travelling in congested areas, and watch out for vehicles exiting driveways.
- Avoid driving a scooter at night – use lights and reflectors if you must drive at night.
Plan your trip
Plan your route in advance.
- Potential hazards – think about any potential hazards like rough terrain, busy crossings or roadworks.
- Consider other factors – check the weather and be sure you’re feeling okay before you head off.
